You can donate a car with expired registration in Nevada. You do NOT have to renew the tags, pay back fees, or make the vehicle driveable before you donate. Here’s how it works in Nevada: once you sign your title over to Heart Wheels, we arrange a free tow anywhere in the state—your driveway in Green Valley, an apartment lot near Downtown Las Vegas, or a repair shop in Carson City. The vehicle does not need to pass smog or safety, and it does not need current tags. After pickup, the car becomes our responsibility, not yours. You should notify the Nevada DMV of the transfer so you’re not tied to future tickets, fees, or liability. Then Heart Wheels processes your donation and mails you a tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) whose programs support people who are blind or visually impaired.

Check that you have a valid Nevada title in your name
Find your Nevada title—this is what matters, not your expired registration or tags. Make sure your name is listed as the owner and there are no unlisted liens. Even if the car is non-running or has been parked for years in Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno, or Elko, as long as the title is valid, Heart Wheels can usually accept your donation.
Call or go online to start your Heart Wheels donation
Provide basic information: year, make, model, VIN, and where the vehicle is located in Nevada. Let us know the registration is expired and if it runs or not. We’ll confirm we can take it, answer any Nevada-specific questions, and schedule a pickup window that works for you, usually within a few days.
Prepare the title and remove your personal items
Before the tow truck arrives, sign the Nevada title where we instruct you (we’ll walk you through it), and remove plates and personal items from the car. It’s fine if the tags are long expired or the inspection is out of date. The driver will review the paperwork quickly, load the vehicle, and you’ll get a pickup receipt on the spot.

Notify Nevada DMV and keep your tax paperwork
After pickup, you should notify the Nevada DMV of the transfer of ownership and follow local guidance on turning in or destroying plates. Heart Wheels processes the vehicle and Heritage for the Blind sends your tax receipt. For most donors, you can deduct up to $500; if it qualifies for more, you’ll receive the IRS Form 1098-C details.
Potential complications to watch for
Title not in your name or missing entirely
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but we do need a valid title. If the title is lost, damaged, or still in a previous owner’s name, contact the Nevada DMV about a duplicate or title transfer before scheduling pickup. Having the title in your name is what legally allows you to donate the car without delays.
Active lien or loan still on the vehicle
Tip: If a bank or finance company is still listed as lienholder on the title, we generally can’t complete the donation until the lien is released. Check your Nevada title for a lien section. If one is listed, call the lender to verify it’s fully paid and ask how to obtain a lien release so we can transfer the vehicle smoothly.
Plates and DMV liability after the tow
Tip: Once the tow truck leaves, you’re not done until you update the Nevada DMV. Remove your plates and follow state guidance on turning them in or destroying them. File any required release-of-liability or notice-of-sale form so you’re not tied to future tickets, fees, or issues with a car you no longer own.
Out-of-state title or registration situation
Tip: If your tags expired in another state but the car now sits in Nevada, we usually can still help. What matters is a valid title, even if it’s from another state.
